Leeds Boss Praises Calvert-Lewin After Late Equalizer at Brentford
Leeds United manager Daniel Farke commended striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin as one of England’s top forwards after his late equalizer secured a 1-1 draw against Brentford on December 14, 2023. Calvert-Lewin’s goal, his fifth of the season, came eight minutes from full time when he headed in a cross from substitute Willy Gnonto, cancelling out a first-half strike from Jordan Henderson.
This latest performance marks Calvert-Lewin’s fourth goal in as many matches, reinforcing his reputation as a key player for Leeds. Farke expressed his appreciation, stating, “He right now delivers, more or less on a weekly, or with this schedule nearly twice-weekly, basis. We’re pretty fortunate and blessed to have him. For me, he’s one of the best English strikers in this league.”
In a historic moment for Brentford, Jordan Henderson, at 35 years old, became the club’s oldest ever Premier League goalscorer. His goal, a memorable return to the scoresheet, was his first in the league since he netted for Liverpool in December 2021. After the match, Henderson reflected on the game, saying, “Physically I feel very good. A point in this league is still good against a good Leeds team. We will take the point and move on.”
Despite the draw, Brentford’s manager Keith Andrews expressed disappointment at not securing all three points. He noted, “They had a particularly good second half. I thought we controlled a lot of the first half, but then in the second half, the momentum shifted a little bit in their way. It was disappointing we couldn’t see it out.”
Following this match, Brentford sits at 14th in the Premier League standings with a total of 20 points, while Leeds United remains just three points above the relegation zone in 17th place. With both teams looking to improve their standings, the draw leaves them with plenty to ponder as they continue their campaigns.
