Two Killed, Eight Critically Injured in Brown University Shooting
A shooting at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, on December 13, 2023, resulted in the deaths of two individuals and left eight others in critical condition. The incident occurred on the Ivy League campus, prompting a swift response from local law enforcement and federal agencies. As of late afternoon, the shooter remains at large, raising concerns within the community.
Providence Mayor Brett Smiley confirmed the fatalities during a news conference. “I can confirm that there are two individuals who have died this afternoon, and there are another eight in critical status,” he stated. The authorities are actively investigating the situation and have not apprehended any suspects at this time.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), along with other federal officials, arrived at the scene shortly after the shooting was reported. Pam Bondi, the Attorney General of Rhode Island, emphasized the seriousness of the situation on social media, confirming that federal agents are involved in the ongoing investigation.
Brown University classified the event as an “active shooter” situation on its official website. As of 17:11 ET, the university indicated that no suspects had been taken into custody. Other reports suggest that the number of injured may be as high as 20 individuals, although Kristy DosReis, the chief public information officer for public safety in Providence, refrained from confirming specific details regarding the injuries or fatalities. “There have been multiple people shot,” she noted, urging the public to shelter in place while the investigation continues.
Amid the chaos, former President Donald Trump expressed his condolences and support for the victims through a post on his Truth Social platform. “The FBI is on the scene,” he wrote. “God bless the victims and the families of the victims!”
Brown University, located near Boston, serves approximately 11,000 students. This tragic incident adds to the growing list of school shootings in the United States, highlighting ongoing challenges related to gun access and safety on educational campuses.
