Suriname Appoints Henk ten Cate as New Coach for World Cup Playoffs
Suriname has appointed veteran coach Henk ten Cate as the new head coach of their national football team, aiming for success in the upcoming World Cup playoffs. The announcement was made by the Suriname Football Association on December 14. Ten Cate, 71, brings extensive experience to the role, having previously coached renowned clubs such as Ajax Amsterdam and served as an assistant at both Barcelona and Chelsea.
Ten Cate’s primary objective will be to lead Suriname in their quest to qualify for their first-ever World Cup. The team is set to face Bolivia in a crucial playoff match on March 26, 2024, in Monterrey. A victory in this match would advance Suriname to a subsequent encounter against Iraq on March 31, determining their place in the 2026 World Cup. Should they qualify, Suriname would join Group I, competing against football powerhouses such as France, Norway, and Senegal, with matches scheduled in cities like Boston, Philadelphia, and Toronto.
The decision to appoint Ten Cate follows a disappointing performance in the recent Concacaf zone Group A tie against Guatemala, where Suriname suffered a 3-1 loss. This defeat allowed Panama to surpass Suriname in the standings, securing an automatic qualification spot. The outcome ultimately led to the resignation of former coach Stanley Menzo, a former Netherlands international goalkeeper.
In their statement regarding the appointment, the Suriname Football Association expressed confidence in Ten Cate’s abilities, highlighting his expertise and tactical knowledge. The association stated, “The SVB has full confidence that his expertise, tactical insights, and leadership can elevate the squad to the highest level.” Ten Cate’s most recent coaching experience was in 2023, where he served as an assistant to Aron Winter, the Suriname national coach.
As Suriname gears up for this pivotal moment in their football history, Ten Cate’s leadership and experience will be instrumental in guiding the team through the challenges that lie ahead in their World Cup journey.
