Travellers Urged to Vaccinate Before Year-End Getaways
With the year-end travel season underway, the Communicable Diseases Agency (CDA) in Singapore is strongly advising holidaymakers to prioritize their health by obtaining necessary vaccinations and medications prior to international travel. This guidance aims to mitigate the risks of preventable illnesses such as malaria and typhoid fever.
The CDA, which officially launched in December 2023, recommends that travellers consult a travel health clinic at least four to six weeks before departure. This timeframe allows individuals to receive essential advice on required vaccinations and strategies to maintain health while abroad. “When people travel to neighbouring countries, it feels familiar so they often forget to get vaccines,” stated Associate Professor Lim Poh Lian, the group director of communicable diseases programmes at the CDA. Busy schedules and impulsive travel planning can lead to oversights regarding vaccinations.
In 2022, Singapore recorded five cases of malaria and 14 cases of typhoid fever among its residents. The CDA confirmed that the malaria cases were linked to travel, while the typhoid cases were likely also connected to overseas trips. Singapore has maintained its status as malaria-free since 1982. The disease spreads through infected mosquitoes that breed in stagnant water. Vaccination is advised for travellers heading to regions in Asia, Africa, and South America where malaria is prevalent.
Typhoid fever, caused by a strain of salmonella bacteria, is transmitted through contaminated food or water. It is particularly common in South Asia and Southeast Asia. Certain destinations mandate vaccinations, including for yellow fever, which is not present in Singapore. A single vaccine provides lifelong protection, and failure to obtain it may result in quarantine upon return to Singapore. The CDA highlighted the need for continued vigilance regarding the potential introduction and spread of yellow fever in the country, as 27 African nations and 13 Latin American countries are classified as high-risk for outbreaks.
“A lot of people enjoy going on safari, and if you’re traveling to specific countries in Africa or South America, yellow fever vaccination is required,” explained Associate Professor Lim. She urged travellers to check vaccination requirements for their destinations to avoid unexpected quarantines upon returning home.
Protecting Against Respiratory Infections
In addition to the risk of preventable diseases, travellers should also be vigilant about respiratory infections, especially during festive gatherings and travel. Associate Professor Lim noted that the flu season is currently affecting the northern hemisphere, which is experiencing winter conditions. Even brief layovers can heighten exposure to various viruses. “When you’re in a crowded airport with travellers from many different continents, it’s easy to get exposed,” she remarked. “Even if you’re heading to a warm destination, the risk remains high during transit.”
To prepare for potential illness while travelling, the CDA recommends that individuals pack a small medical kit, including items such as thermometers and antiseptic creams, which are commonly available in pharmacies. The agency is also enhancing its website to provide updated travel safety practices, health information specific to destinations, and entry requirements.
As the travel season progresses, the CDA’s emphasis on vaccinations and health preparedness serves as a crucial reminder for all travellers to safeguard their health and that of others while exploring new destinations.
