Spotify Restores Service After Global Outage Affects Thousands
Music streaming platform Spotify has largely restored service following a significant global outage that impacted tens of thousands of users on December 15, 2023. According to outage tracking website Downdetector, reports of issues peaked at nearly 36,000 before subsiding significantly throughout the day.
By 10:30 a.m. ET, the number of user-reported incidents in the United States had decreased to approximately 1,000. In the United Kingdom, reports fell from over 10,300 earlier in the day to nearly 250, indicating a swift resolution to the problems affecting users.
Users took to social media platforms, including Reddit and X, to discuss various issues experienced during the outage. Common complaints included difficulties logging in, accessing the homepage, and issues with song playback.
In response to the outage, Spotify acknowledged the disruption through a post on X. The company informed users that the issue had been resolved and directed those still experiencing problems to its community support page. At the time of writing, Spotify had not provided further details regarding the cause of the outage and did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Reuters.
This disruption marks the third major outage for Spotify in 2023, following incidents that occurred in April and June. The actual number of affected users may vary from the figures reported on Downdetector, as these statistics are compiled from user-submitted reports.
In the aftermath of the outage, Spotify’s shares experienced a downturn, falling by nearly 3 percent during morning trading. The company faces scrutiny as it continues to address service reliability amid increasing competition in the streaming market.
