Bencic Claims 10th Title with Impressive Tokyo Victory
Belinda Bencic achieved a remarkable milestone by winning her second title of the season at the Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo on October 22, 2023. The Swiss tennis player defeated the Czech Republic’s Linda Noskova with a score of 6-2, 6-3, marking the 10th WTA title of her career. This victory comes just a year after Bencic returned to professional tennis following the birth of her daughter in April 2022.
The 28-year-old expressed her surprise at the speed and success of her comeback, stating, “I couldn’t be more happy and I’m definitely surprised. This was definitely not planned.” Bencic’s return has been nothing short of impressive; she began the season ranked 421 in the world but has surged to 13 following her Tokyo win.
Remarkable Comeback Journey
Bencic’s journey back to the top is noteworthy, especially after taking a six-month break from the sport. Her performance at the Australian Open, where she reached the last 16 after defeating former world number one Naomi Osaka, provided her with the confidence to continue competing at a high level.
“It’s hard work but it’s a lot of self-belief and a lot of mental belief as well,” Bencic explained. She previously held a career-high ranking of four in February 2020. Reflecting on her journey, Bencic noted that she did not anticipate being able to compete at such a high level again.
The Tokyo final was a testament to her resilience. After navigating through tough matches against Karolina Muchova and Sofia Kenin in the earlier rounds, Bencic showed her determination and skill against Noskova, who was seeking her first title of the season.
Final Match Insights and Post-Match Reflections
Bencic’s victory was not without effort; she faced a challenging route to the final. Noskova, 20, had a comparatively easier path after benefiting from an early retirement by Anna Kalinskaya in the quarter-finals and a walkover from Elena Rybakina in the semi-finals. Noskova struggled during the final, failing to convert on ten break points, which she attributed to a lack of match practice.
“I definitely didn’t have such control over all the points or all of my balls as I did a couple of matches ago,” Noskova said.
The Pan Pacific Open faced challenges before its beginning, with nine withdrawals, including top ten players Jasmine Paolini and Jessica Pegula, which affected the overall competition.
Bencic’s recovery routine also played a significant role in her performance, as she credited Japanese miso soup and sushi for helping her regain energy after a demanding semi-final. “Miso soup, I swear, it’s great for recovery,” she remarked, highlighting its positive effects on her performance.
As Bencic continues her journey in professional tennis, she remains focused on further improving her ranking and enjoying her time back on the tour. With her latest victory, she has reaffirmed her status as a formidable competitor in women’s tennis.
