Singapore Fencers Secure Two Gold Medals at SEA Games 2023
Singapore’s fencers showcased exceptional skill and teamwork on December 18, 2023, at the 33rd Southeast Asian Games held in Bangkok. The team secured two more gold medals, bringing their total medal count to six, which includes three gold, three silver, and two bronze.
The men’s foil team, consisting of Samuel Robson, Jonathan Lim, Julian Soh, and Raphael Tan, dominated their match against Malaysia, clinching gold with a final score of 45-20. This victory marks a significant improvement from their performance at the last Games in Cambodia, where they secured a silver medal.
Another highlight of the day was the women’s epee team, comprising Kiria Tikanah Abdul Rahman, Elle Koh, Esther Tan, and Filzah Hidayah Nor Anuar, who triumphed over Thailand with a score of 45-36. This win represents Singapore’s third consecutive gold in this event, solidifying their strong presence in the sport.
The women’s sabre team, featuring Juliet Heng, Jae Lim, Christine Tan, and Jermaine Tan, faced a setback against Thailand, finishing with a score of 32-45 and earning a silver medal. Despite the loss, the team’s performance reflects progress, as they previously secured a bronze in the last SEA Games.
As the competition continues, Singapore’s women’s foil team, men’s epee team, and men’s sabre team are scheduled to compete on the final day. A gold medal from any of these teams would equal Singapore’s best showing in fencing at the SEA Games, where they previously won seven gold medals in 2023.
