Australian Woman Grows World’s Largest Minions Collection in Singapore
In October 2023, Liesl Benecke, an Australian from Perth, visited Universal Studios Singapore (USS) with a singular aim: to expand her extensive collection of Minions memorabilia. Dressed in vibrant blue and yellow, the 52-year-old enthusiastically embraced her passion for these beloved characters, greeting visitors with a cheerful “Bello!” As she explored Minion Land, Benecke’s excitement was palpable, exemplifying her status as the “Minion Lady.”
The day began at the Minion Marketplace, where Benecke’s eyes lit up at the sight of plush toys, mugs, and figurines. “I worked hard before this trip so I could splurge here. Budgets don’t exist when it comes to Minions,” she remarked, emerging from the store with 42 new items, including a limited-edition piece exclusive to USS. The thrill of the hunt and the joy of adding to her collection clearly fueled her enthusiasm.
From Humble Beginnings to a World Record
Benecke’s journey into the world of Minions began in 2010 when she took her daughters to see the film *Despicable Me*. While they enjoyed the movie, it was the Minions that captivated her. “They were just so funny – they tickled my funny bone,” she recalled. Her first collectible, a packet of Minion-shaped lollies, remains a cherished item in her collection, which now boasts an impressive count of over 1,035 unique items, officially recognized by the Guinness World Record in February 2023.
Her collection has continued to grow, especially after the release of new films and merchandise. “Things picked up around 2018 when more Minion films came out and there was so much new merchandise around the world,” she explained. Benecke primarily sources items through Facebook Marketplace and her travels, where she immerses herself in the full Minion experience.
Benecke’s home in Perth contrasts sharply with its ordinary exterior. Inside, the walls are adorned with Minions posters, while shelves overflow with collectibles ranging from clothing to kitchen utensils and even a chess set. “A sales consultant once came to my house for an appointment and was so shocked to see all the Minions that he took a photo to show his grandchildren,” she shared. Her most prized possessions include a set of Swarovski Minions, with each piece valued at approximately A$1,000 (around US$649), and an entire collection insured for A$10,000.
A Family Affair and Future Plans
Benecke’s passion is not just a personal venture; it has become a family affair. Her daughters, mother, and boyfriend actively contribute to her collection, often surprising her with new finds. “I have a lot of ‘Minions’ working for me,” she joked. Her boyfriend, Mark, a tattoo artist, has even joined in on the fun by tattooing a Minion on himself and starting a small collection of his own.
As her next birthday approaches, Benecke is already planning a Minion-themed celebration, complete with decorations and party supplies. “I’m going to put little dungarees on the bottom and a big eye on the front” of her future car, she excitedly noted, envisioning a vehicle that reflects her exuberant personality.
For Benecke, collecting Minions is more than a hobby; it serves as a source of joy amid life’s challenges. “When I think of Minions, it makes me happy. It gives me goosebumps. It just brings me joy,” she stated. Looking ahead, she hopes to one day donate her entire collection to a children’s hospital, providing joy to others just as these characters have brought happiness into her life.
