Singapore Launches Job Matching Initiative to Connect Locals with Work

A new initiative aimed at connecting residents in Singapore with local job opportunities was officially launched on October 23, 2023. The program, named Jobs Nearby @ CDC, is spearheaded by the five Community Development Councils (CDCs) and seeks to assist unemployed individuals in finding work closer to home. Prime Minister Lawrence Wong introduced the initiative during an event at the Taman Jurong Community Club, emphasizing the importance of addressing local employment challenges.

During the launch, Mr. Wong highlighted that job accessibility is a major concern for many Singaporeans. He stated, “We will continue to do all we can at the national level, but national efforts alone are not enough. They have to be complemented by community initiatives.” The initiative aims to meet the specific needs of job seekers, many of whom prefer to work near their residences to achieve a better work-life balance.

Connecting Job Seekers with Local Opportunities

The Jobs Nearby initiative was initially piloted in the South West District on August 31. Under this scheme, each district will maintain a dedicated job bank, separate from the national job bank, allowing residents to find employment opportunities that include full-time, part-time, and flexible roles. Additionally, job ambassadors will provide customized assistance and guidance throughout the job search process.

Community job clinics will also be established in popular local venues such as community clubs and coffee shops. This direct connection between job seekers and employers aims to simplify the job search experience and enhance local employment rates. “These will complement efforts at the national level,” Mr. Wong added, referring to existing programs like SkillsFuture, Workforce Singapore, and the National Trades Union Congress’ Employment and Employability Institute.

Addressing the broader economic context, Mr. Wong acknowledged that Singapore’s small, open economy makes it susceptible to global fluctuations. He pointed out that while job vacancies exist and unemployment rates remain low, there is an increasing sense of uncertainty in the job market. Factors contributing to this anxiety include external trade tensions, particularly those arising from tariffs imposed by the United States, and the rapid technological advancements, including artificial intelligence.

Empowering Communities and Individuals

Mr. Wong emphasized the need for proactive measures to adapt to evolving job market demands. “We can’t just leave the creation of good jobs and the matching of skills to new demands to the market,” he stated. Efforts to expand the SkillsFuture initiative and enhance career counseling services for recent graduates are part of the broader strategy to equip Singaporeans with necessary skills.

Prominent figures at the launch included the five mayors, such as Senior Minister of State for Trade and Industry Low Yen Ling and Minister of State for Culture, Community and Youth Baey Yam Keng. Ms. Low, who is also the chairperson of the Mayors’ Committee, reiterated the CDCs’ commitment to fostering a “We First” society, a concept promoted by Mr. Wong during this year’s National Day Rally.

Ms. Low noted that the CDCs have identified specific groups, such as seniors and caregivers, who require additional support in their job searches. Furthermore, she acknowledged that local businesses often struggle to connect with potential employees. “This is where the CDCs can bridge the gap between job seekers and employers in the neighborhood,” she explained, highlighting the initiative’s potential to improve livelihoods and sustain local businesses.
