Singapore Men’s Water Polo Team Defends SEA Games Title Against Indonesia
Singapore’s men’s water polo team has successfully defended their title at the Southeast Asian Games by defeating Indonesia 19-16 in a thrilling final round-robin match on December 19, 2023. The victory at the Thammasat Water Sports Center secures Singapore’s status as the top team in the region, continuing a strong legacy in the sport.
Both teams entered the match undefeated, having previously triumphed over Malaysia, the Philippines, and Thailand. Despite Singapore fielding a squad with several newcomers, their superior goal difference allowed them to top the group standings prior to this decisive encounter.
The match began intensely, with both teams exchanging leads throughout the first period. The score remained tight, with neither side establishing more than a one-goal advantage. It was in the closing moments of the first period that Dominic Chan scored, putting Singapore ahead 8-6 at halftime.
As the second period unfolded, Indonesia’s Ahmad Fauzy Mappatabe ignited their offense, leveling the score at 11-11 late in the half. The third period saw a notable decrease in scoring, yet Singapore managed to regain control, finishing the period with a slight 14-13 lead.
In the final stretch, Singapore maintained their composure and extended their lead, ultimately sealing the victory. This triumph marks a significant moment for the team, especially after their winning streak was interrupted in 2019, when they had held the SEA Games title for an impressive 27 consecutive editions.
The Singapore men’s water polo team previously showcased their skills at the World Aquatics Championships in July 2023, where they finished 15th out of 16 teams. This experience on a global stage proved advantageous, as they subsequently placed fifth at the Asian Aquatics Championships in India just two months later.
In related news, Singapore’s women’s water polo team is also vying for gold at the SEA Games, set to face defending champions Thailand in a crucial match later today.
The 33rd SEA Games are being broadcast live, and fans can catch all the action on mewatch. For updates on sporting events, follow Mediacorp Sports on TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook.
