Vitor Pereira Fined £15,000 for Red Card Incident at Wolves Match
Wolverhampton Wanderers manager Vitor Pereira has received a fine of £15,000 (approximately $20,131) following an incident during a match against Brighton & Hove Albion earlier this month. The Portuguese coach was dismissed after kicking a spare match ball into the dugout in frustration, resulting in a red card around the 19th minute of the game.
The incident unfolded when Pereira reacted to what he perceived as a missed free kick for his team. His actions not only led to his dismissal but also caused a disruption among the match officials. According to the Football Association (FA), the ball struck the floor manager from Sky Sports, prompting the match manager to take evasive action. Following the incident, Pereira approached the affected staff member to offer his apologies twice.
Assistant manager Luis Miguel later commented on the situation, explaining, “The ball was there, he kicked the ball; sometimes you kick a bottle of water or something. We lost our minds. I’m sorry.” The FA confirmed that Pereira admitted to acting in an improper manner, which directly led to his dismissal.
Nearly two weeks after the incident, Pereira addressed the situation publicly at a press conference. “I know football is emotional, and I’m an emotional guy,” he stated. “But my behaviour was not proper. I kicked a ball, and it cannot happen again. I apologise.”
This incident highlights the intense emotions that can accompany high-stakes matches in professional football. As the Wolves continue their campaign, Pereira’s fine serves as a reminder of the need for composure, both on and off the pitch.
