Thailand’s Exports Surge 19% in September, Outpacing Predictions

Thailand’s customs-cleared exports experienced a remarkable increase of 19.0 percent in September 2025 compared to the same month last year. This growth marks the fastest rate of expansion in over three and a half years, according to the Commerce Ministry. The figure significantly exceeded analysts’ forecasts, which anticipated a more modest increase of 7.0 percent, based on a poll conducted by Reuters.

The surge in exports follows a previous rise of 5.8 percent in August. The ministry attributed this impressive performance to improved clarity regarding U.S. tariffs and indications that the U.S. trade policies could be softened further. In September, exports to the United States—Thailand’s largest trading partner—skyrocketed by 35.3 percent year-on-year.

Trade Agreement Enhances Export Prospects

The recent increase in exports is bolstered by a framework agreement reached between Thailand and the United States, which aims to eliminate tariff barriers on approximately 99 percent of U.S. goods entering Thailand. Notably, the U.S. recently adjusted its tariff on imported goods from Thailand to 19 percent, a reduction from the previously imposed 36 percent. This change aligns Thailand’s tariff rates with those of other countries in the region and is expected to further facilitate trade.

In the first nine months of 2025, Thailand’s exports, a crucial component of the nation’s economic landscape, have risen by 13.9 percent compared to the same period last year. This upward trend underscores the importance of exports in driving Thailand’s economic growth, especially in light of the evolving global trade environment.

The strong performance in September suggests a positive outlook for Thai exports, as businesses adapt to changes in international trade dynamics and capitalize on new opportunities. As the world economy continues to recover, Thailand’s export sector is poised for further growth, contingent upon sustained demand from key markets such as the United States.
