Manchester City Faces Key Player Absences in League Cup Clash
Manchester City will enter their League Cup quarter-final match against Brentford on December 20 without several key players, according to manager Pep Guardiola. The team will be missing Belgian forward Jeremy Doku, who has been sidelined due to a leg injury that also kept him from participating in the recent Premier League victory over Crystal Palace.
Guardiola provided an update on Doku’s recovery, suggesting that he might return for the match against Sunderland on January 1, 2024. “We will see,” he stated during a press conference on December 16. The team will also be without defenders John Stones and Rodri, both of whom are nursing injuries. Stones is dealing with a thigh issue, while Rodri is recovering from a hamstring strain.
Additionally, Omar Marmoush and Rayan Ait-Nouri are currently on international duty, participating in the Africa Cup of Nations. This combination of absences poses a challenge for City as they aim to progress to the semi-finals of the tournament.
Guardiola emphasized the significance of the match, remarking, “When you are one game away from the semi-finals, if you can take it, take it, because you never know when it’s coming back.” He acknowledged the difficult situation but remains focused on the opportunity at hand.
In light of the injuries and absences, goalkeeper James Trafford is set to start in place of Gianluigi Donnarumma, the recently named FIFA Men’s Goalkeeper of 2025. Guardiola indicated that he plans to make several changes to the lineup, allowing players who have not seen much action recently the chance to contribute. “James is going to play and all the players that didn’t play recently are going to play and some from the Academy,” he noted, highlighting the packed December schedule that includes seven matches.
While Guardiola stated that reaching the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup is important, he also acknowledged that success in such tournaments typically hinges on having a fully fit squad. “I’m not saying it’s not the priority to get to the semi-finals, but normally when we achieve it, it’s when we have all the squad, no injuries and we can rotate,” he explained.
Manchester City, who have won the League Cup four times under Guardiola’s management, are currently pursuing success in both domestic and cup competitions. They are closely trailing Arsenal in the Premier League title race, sitting just two points behind the leaders. As City prepares for the match against Brentford, all eyes will be on how they manage the absence of key players and the impact it may have on their quest for silverware.
