Pritam Singh Issues Apology for Contempt Comments on CNA
Pritam Singh, the Leader of the Opposition in Singapore, has formally apologised to the court following his comments on the Channel News Asia (CNA) programme “The Assembly.” After being informed that his remarks could be interpreted as contempt of court, Singh acknowledged the potential implications of his statements. In a Facebook post dated December 13, he stated, “I accept that my statements may be construed to be in contempt of court, including to impugn the integrity, propriety or impartiality of the court.”
In the episode, which aired on November 5, Singh addressed accusations of dishonesty directed at him. The interview, conducted by a group of neurodivergent individuals, was recorded in July, shortly before Singh’s appeal against his conviction for lying to a parliamentary committee was heard by the High Court. On December 4, the court dismissed his appeal.
Following the airing of the interview, Singh posted additional comments on his Facebook account on November 6 and November 8, drawing attention to his statements. The Ministry of Law responded critically to his comments, stating that they suggested the prosecution against him was politically motivated, thereby undermining the integrity of the legal system.
Minister for Law Edwin Tong highlighted the seriousness of Singh’s remarks, indicating that they “denigrate the court’s judgment and undermine public trust in our legal system and the judiciary,” which he deemed “completely unacceptable.” The Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC) notified Singh on November 28 that his comments were in contempt of court and invited him to issue an apology.
Following his public apology, the Ministry of Law confirmed that Singh had expressed full acceptance of the court’s judgment without reservation. The ministry welcomed his acknowledgment that it is inappropriate for politicians to challenge the integrity of the courts.
The judiciary plays a crucial role in maintaining public trust in Singapore’s legal system, and Singh’s apology underscores the importance of respecting the independence of the judiciary. As this situation unfolds, it serves as a reminder of the responsibilities held by public figures in their interactions with the justice system.
