Chelsea’s Bompastor Backing Kerr’s Return to Top Form
Chelsea FC’s forward Sam Kerr is currently working to regain her peak performance after an injury setback. Manager Sonia Bompastor expressed her confidence in the Australian striker’s ability to return to form, stating it is only a matter of time. Kerr, 32, resumed playing in September following an anterior cruciate ligament injury sustained in January 2024. Despite a scoreless performance during Chelsea’s emphatic 6-0 victory over Roma in the Women’s Champions League, Bompastor remains optimistic.
Bompastor emphasized the importance of scoring for both Kerr’s confidence and that of the team. “It’s better for her confidence and the team’s confidence if she is able to score,” Bompastor said. “But I know enough about football to understand it will take time for her to recover her best level.” Observers noted improvements in Kerr’s performance, with Bompastor indicating that her movement and overall contribution have enhanced since her return.
Since joining Chelsea in 2020, Kerr has secured five league titles, three FA Cups, and two League Cups. Bompastor highlighted the striker’s determination and work ethic as key factors in her recovery. “She has the right mentality and is making all the effort to get to a point where she will contribute again by scoring goals and helping the team to perform,” Bompastor added. “I’m not worried. It takes time, and I hope for her and her confidence that will happen soon.”
As Chelsea sits second in the Women’s Super League standings with 21 points, the team is preparing for a crucial match against Brighton & Hove Albion on December 17, 2024. Following that, Chelsea will face Wolfsburg in the Champions League on December 21, 2024. With Kerr striving to regain her form, her contributions could be pivotal in the upcoming fixtures.
Bompastor’s unwavering support for Kerr highlights not only the manager’s belief in her abilities but also the broader expectations surrounding the team as they aim for further success in both domestic and European competitions.
