China Threatens Japan Over Taiwan Remarks, Ignoring Peace Calls

China has dismissed international calls for peace in the Taiwan Strait, instead issuing threats towards nations that support Taiwan, according to Shen Yu-chung, Deputy Minister of the Mainland Affairs Council (MAC). His comments follow a diplomatic confrontation between Japan and China sparked by remarks made by Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi.

Escalating Tensions in the Taiwan Strait

On March 15, 2024, China demanded that Takaichi retract her statement regarding the potential for military conflict over Taiwan, which she described as a “survival-threatening situation” for Japan. The significance of her wording lies in its implication that Japan may have legal grounds to deploy its military in defense of allied nations, should a conflict arise.

The Chinese government reacted swiftly to Takaichi’s comments. Chinese Consul General in Osaka, Xue Jian, threatened on social media, stating, “If you go sticking that filthy neck where it doesn’t belong, it’s gonna get sliced right off.” His post was later deleted but underscored the rising tensions. In a formal response, Sun Weidong, Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs, summoned the Japanese ambassador to convey Beijing’s displeasure and warned that Japan must bear the consequences if it continues to interfere in China’s “reunification” efforts.

International Implications and Reactions

As tensions escalated, a commentary in the Chinese state-run People’s Daily labeled Takaichi’s remarks as “extremely sinister.” It remains uncertain whether the summoning of the Japanese ambassador was merely a formal expression of discontent or whether it could affect ongoing business and trade relations between the two countries.

During a forum in Taipei, Shen reiterated Taiwan’s commitment to maintaining the current status quo in the Taiwan Strait, asserting that China is actively trying to disrupt regional peace. He emphasized that Beijing ignores international pleas regarding cross-strait issues while intimidating other nations that express pro-Taiwan sentiments.

In response to Xue’s comments, Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Minoru Kihara confirmed that Tokyo had lodged a complaint with Beijing. Kihara stated, “We reiterated our position on the matter and explained the intention behind Prime Minister Takaichi’s comments.” Furthermore, Japan summoned Chinese Ambassador to Japan Wu Jianghao to express strong disapproval of Xue’s remarks. The Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs urged Wu to ensure that China takes appropriate measures to de-escalate the situation.

At the Caixin Summit in Beijing, Kanasugi from the summit noted that despite existing difficulties, China and Japan should work towards deepening their relationship. He acknowledged the numerous challenges but emphasized the importance of cooperation on common agenda items.

The ongoing situation highlights the delicate balance of power in the Asia-Pacific region and the significant implications for international relations, particularly concerning Taiwan’s status and Japan’s role as a regional ally.
