Justice Ajay Kumar Tripathi Foundation Hosts Samvaad 2.0 on Sustainability
The Justice Ajay Kumar Tripathi Foundation hosted its fourth annual event, Samvaad 2.0, on November 16, 2025, at the India International Centre in New Delhi. This year’s theme focused on “Sustainable Development and the Idea of India therein,” bringing together prominent jurists and legal scholars to engage in meaningful discussions about India’s constitutional identity and environmental challenges.
Exploring Sustainable Development in India
The event continued the Foundation’s commitment to fostering public discourse on legal and constitutional matters. It examined how principles of sustainability are woven into India’s developing narrative, particularly as the nation marks 75 years since the Constitution’s adoption. The conversation highlighted the need for a balance between ecological stewardship and social justice, as emphasized by Hon’ble Justice Abhay Shreeniwas Oka, a retired Judge of the Supreme Court of India. He stated, “Sustainable development must flow from the Constitution’s idea of India—one that balances environmental protection with social justice.” He further remarked on the shared responsibility of citizens and the State in safeguarding natural resources, emphasizing that true progress entails more than just infrastructure expansion.
In his remarks, Hon’ble Justice Najmi Waziri, also a retired Judge of the High Court of Delhi, addressed the pressing issue of pollution in Delhi. He noted, “Any law is only as valuable as its real-world impact.” He stressed the importance of citizen engagement in environmental initiatives, reflecting on how individuals in Delhi have taken the initiative to plant trees, demonstrating that effective change often begins at the grassroots level.
Legal Framework and Citizen Participation
During the discussions, Mr. K. Parameshwar, a Senior Advocate at the Supreme Court of India, articulated that sustainable development is not merely a theoretical concept but a constitutional obligation. He pointed out that while environmental protections are often found within the rights enshrined in Part III of the Constitution, this approach can limit broader democratic participation. He argued for a stronger integration of environmental justice within the Directive Principles of State Policy, highlighting the need for enhanced accountability and public involvement.
Moderator Ms. Shahrukh Alam, an Advocate at the Supreme Court of India, reinforced the idea that environmental justice is inherently a political issue. She argued that equitable access to clean air, water, and land is crucial, as marginalized communities are disproportionately affected by climate change and urban planning decisions. She urged for genuine public participation in governance, asserting that sustainable development must prioritize equity and community engagement.
The discussions at Samvaad 2.0 underscored the vital role of constitutional values in shaping India’s developmental journey. As the Foundation aims to stimulate public dialogue, the event served as a reminder of the importance of inclusive governance and sustainable practices in addressing the country’s environmental challenges. Established on November 27, 2022, the Justice Ajay Kumar Tripathi Foundation continues to evolve as a platform for enriching conversations about the Idea of India.
With a commitment to advancing legal discourse, the Foundation, overseen by Justice Tripathi’s family, is poised to play a significant role in shaping the future of India’s sustainable development narrative.
