Argentina Stages Dramatic Comeback to Overcome Scotland 33-24
Argentina mounted a stunning comeback at Murrayfield on March 17, 2024, overcoming a 21-0 deficit to defeat Scotland 33-24. The Pumas scored five unanswered tries in a remarkable 20-minute spell during the second half, demonstrating resilience and tactical acumen.
Scotland appeared to be in firm control of the match early on, scoring three tries within the first 44 minutes. Jack Dempsey opened the scoring for the home side in the 13th minute, sprinting through the Argentine defence to touch down. Ewan Ashman followed with two tries, the first coming shortly after Dempsey’s effort, and the second just four minutes into the second half.
The turning point came when Argentina made five substitutions at the start of the second half. This strategic change injected fresh energy into the team, which had struggled to find their rhythm. The Pumas’ first points came in the 55th minute when captain Julian Montoya scored following a series of powerful forward runs.
Santiago Carreras converted four of Argentina’s five tries, while Scotland’s Finn Russell contributed a penalty and three conversions during the match. After Montoya’s try, Argentina continued to build momentum.
Argentina’s second try, scored by Rodrigo Isgro, came just three minutes later, following a break initiated by Juan Martin Gonzalez. Despite Russell’s penalty extending Scotland’s lead to 24-12, Argentina was undeterred. They responded with a third try through Pedro Rubiolo, cutting the gap to five points.
With the match entering its final minutes, tension mounted within the Murrayfield crowd. A critical break by Carreras set up another attacking phase for Argentina, culminating in Pablo Matera scoring to put Argentina ahead for the first time. Carreras then converted the try, giving the Pumas a 25-24 lead with just five minutes remaining.
In a dramatic finish, Argentina sealed their comeback with a fifth try from Justo Piccardo in the final minute. The Pumas’ ability to adapt and respond in the second half highlighted their competitiveness and determination as they celebrated a hard-fought victory.
This match serves as a reminder of the unpredictability of rugby, where fortunes can change rapidly. The result is a significant boost for Argentina as they look forward to future challenges, while Scotland will reflect on a missed opportunity to secure a home win.
