Collin Chee Apologizes After Controversy Over Benz Hui’s Funeral
Actor and television host Collin Chee has issued an apology after facing backlash for comments made regarding the funeral of the late Hong Kong actor Benz Hui, who passed away on October 28, 2023, at the age of 76. Hui’s death was attributed to multiple organ failure resulting from cancer, prompting a memorial service on November 17 and a subsequent funeral the following day.
Chee, who previously collaborated with Hui’s wife, Angeli Lung, during his time at the Television Corporation of Singapore (TCS), spoke to local media outlets, including Lianhe Zaobao and Shin Min Daily News. In his interviews, he reflected on his attendance at Hui’s funeral, sharing details about the service, such as a tribute video prepared by TVB showcasing Hui’s work over the years and the presence of numerous celebrities.
On December 6, Hui’s daughter, Charmaine Hui, took to social media to express her gratitude to family and friends who contributed to a respectful farewell for her father. She emphasized the family’s wishes for privacy during the closed-door ceremony, stating, “most guests who respected the private closed door ceremony – with no recording, no filming, and no sharing of any kind – showed genuine love and respect you had for us.”
However, Charmaine also conveyed her “immense disappointment” towards an “individual from Singapore” who seemingly disregarded this request for privacy. Although she did not name anyone directly, a Hong Kong media outlet identified Chee as the individual in question due to his media statements.
In response to the controversy, Chee reached out to 8world to clarify his intentions. He explained that his aim was simply to honor Hui by sharing his experience and affirming that Hui was a “good person.” He expressed regret for any unintended offense caused and confirmed that he had sent a text message to the Hui family to apologize personally.
The incident highlights the complexities surrounding public figures’ funerals and the balance between sharing memories and respecting familial privacy. As the entertainment community reflects on Hui’s legacy, Chee’s experience serves as a reminder of the sensitivity required in such circumstances.
