Rory McIlroy Urges Rescheduling of Australian Open for Stronger Field
Rory McIlroy, currently ranked second in the world of golf, has called for a rescheduling of the **Australian Open** to enhance its appeal and secure a more competitive international field in future tournaments. McIlroy’s comments came after he participated in the event held at **Royal Melbourne**, where he finished tied for 14th place, eight strokes behind the tournament winner, **Rasmus Neergaard-Petersen**.
Reflecting on his experience, McIlroy expressed enthusiasm about returning to the Australian Open after more than a decade. “I’ve been excited to come back down here for a while, it’s been over 10 years since I played in the Australian Open,” he stated. “This is a golf tournament that has got so much potential, and I think it showed a little bit of that this week. There’s still a ways to go.”
The scheduling challenge is evident as McIlroy noted the existence of three other competing tournaments during the same week. “I would love to have a few more players come down and play. But it’s hard. There needs to be conversations had with people much more important than me that set the schedules and do all that sort of stuff,” he added.
McIlroy hopes that discussions among tournament organizers and golf authorities could yield a date that allows top players the opportunity to participate. “Hopefully the Australian Open can find a date that accommodates everyone, and everyone can at least have the option to come down and play,” he concluded.
The tournament marked the end of an impressive season for the 36-year-old golfer. McIlroy not only secured a long-awaited victory at the **U.S. Masters** earlier in the year but also captured his seventh **Race to Dubai** title and played a crucial role in the European team’s successful defense of the **Ryder Cup** in September.
“I’m looking forward to a little break,” McIlroy remarked, acknowledging the intensity of his schedule following the summer months, which included the Irish Open and various international tournaments. “I played a pretty heavy schedule post the summer, and I’ve been globetrotting all over the last couple of months.”
As the year comes to a close, McIlroy looks forward to some downtime, expressing his desire to reflect on his achievements. “I’m excited to have a little bit of downtime, finally reflect on everything, maybe watch a few of the tournaments back. I’ve not really let myself do that too much,” he said.
With the festive season approaching, McIlroy seems ready to unwind. “Looking forward to the Christmas break, put the feet up, a few glasses of wine, and think back on about what an unbelievable year it’s been,” he remarked.
The future of the Australian Open could hinge on the discussions sparked by McIlroy’s call for change, aiming to attract a stronger field and elevate the tournament’s status on the international golfing calendar.
