Jeonbuk Motors Announces Departure of Title-Winning Coach Gus Poyet
South Korean football club Jeonbuk Motors has confirmed that head coach Gus Poyet will depart after just one season at the helm. The announcement, made on December 8, 2023, follows a successful campaign in which Poyet guided the team to victory in both the K League and the Korean FA Cup.
This season marked a significant turnaround for Jeonbuk, who had struggled in the previous year, finishing in 10th place. Under Poyet’s leadership, the team secured their record-extending 10th league title, finishing 14 points clear of their nearest competitors. This championship also represents Jeonbuk’s first league title in four seasons, a testament to Poyet’s impact on the squad.
The Uruguayan coach, known for his previous roles at clubs such as Sunderland and Real Betis, as well as his tenure with the Greece national team, joined Jeonbuk at the start of the recently concluded season. The club expressed gratitude for his contributions in a social media tribute, stating, “Walking together for the rebirth of Jeonbuk Hyundai, taking us to a new historical moment, good luck in the future coach.”
Poyet’s departure marks the end of an era for Jeonbuk, who will now seek a new head coach to build on the successes of the past season. As the club looks ahead, the challenge will be to maintain their momentum and continue to compete at the highest levels of South Korean football.
The decision comes as the club prepares for the upcoming season, with fans eager to see how Jeonbuk will navigate this transition and whether they can replicate the successes achieved under Poyet’s guidance.
