Newcastle’s Last-Minute Win Over Fulham Sparks Season Revival Hopes
Newcastle United secured a dramatic late 2-1 victory against Fulham in the Premier League on March 16, 2024. The win, marked by a 90th-minute goal from Bruno Guimaraes, not only earned the team three vital points but also provided a potential catalyst for a turnaround in their season, according to manager Eddie Howe.
Guimaraes’ decisive strike came just as the match seemed destined for a draw, following Jacob Murphy‘s opening goal in the 18th minute and Sasa Lukic‘s equalizer for Fulham in the 56th minute. Howe expressed optimism about the impact of the late goal, stating, “Late goals don’t just affect the game you’ve won; they affect mood and belief going forward. This felt like a massive moment for us.”
The victory, which was just Newcastle’s third of the season, lifted them provisionally to 10th place in the league standings. Howe is keen to see his team build on this momentum after a disappointing loss against Brighton and Hove Albion the previous week. The win followed an encouraging 3-0 performance against Benfica in the Champions League, signaling a potential resurgence in form.
Howe’s side came out with purpose, eager to reignite their Premier League ambitions. Murphy’s early goal set the tone for the match, but the equalizer from Fulham injected tension into the game. As the clock ticked down, the Magpies fought hard to secure a win. A crucial moment arrived when substitute William Osula drove towards the edge of the penalty area. His shot was parried by Fulham goalkeeper Bernd Leno, allowing Guimaraes to pounce on the rebound and score from close range.
“It’s one I’ll remember, that’s for sure,” Howe remarked after the game. “You always remember when you win late, and it was a priceless win for us.” The manager highlighted Guimaraes’ commitment, noting his extensive travel for club and country, emphasizing that the midfielder “very rarely lets you down.”
Guimaraes reflected on the match, expressing his relief and joy at the result. “I feel unbelievable. We were very tired from Wednesday’s game and I think we had to learn how to finish the game,” he said. “We cannot play the perfect game every time, but we need to find the three points, and we did this today. Very pleased for everyone.”
The victory at St James’ Park not only boosts Newcastle’s standing but also reinforces their fighting spirit, a quality that Guimaraes believes is essential for the team’s identity. “This is the Newcastle I know; we fight until the end,” he added.
As the season progresses, Newcastle United will aim to carry this momentum into their upcoming fixtures, with Howe keen to replicate the success of last season, where they finished fifth in the league and claimed the League Cup. This latest win against Fulham may just provide the emotional spark needed to propel the Magpies back into contention.
