Odisha’s Rashmita Sahoo Celebrates PM Modi’s Recognition

Rashmita Sahoo, a canoeing athlete from Odisha, expressed her excitement after receiving recognition from Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his monthly radio program, Mann Ki Baat. Following the Prime Minister’s mention, Sahoo is now more determined than ever to secure a medal for India at the upcoming Asian Games.
Currently serving as a constable in the Odisha Police, Sahoo is honing her skills at the Jagatpur Institute of the National Centre of Excellence. Her recent accomplishments include winning two gold medals at the Khelo India Water Sports Festival held in Jammu and Kashmir, where Prime Minister Modi highlighted her achievements.
In his address, Modi congratulated Sahoo and encouraged her to share her sporting journey. Reflecting on this moment, Sahoo stated, “I felt really nice to get a mention in Mann Ki Baat. This is a proud moment for me, my sports centre, and Odisha.” She added that speaking with the Prime Minister was an unforgettable experience that continues to inspire her.
From Humble Beginnings to National Recognition
Sahoo began her canoeing journey in 2017, competing in numerous national championships since then. She has amassed an impressive total of 41 medals, comprising 13 gold, 14 silver, and 14 bronze. Growing up in a small village in Cuttack’s Choudwar, Sahoo faced significant challenges, including the early death of her mother and financial struggles. “My family’s traditional occupation of boating inspired me to take up canoeing,” she noted.
Despite the obstacles, support from her uncle and coach has been crucial in her journey. “This sport has given me an identity,” Sahoo remarked, encouraging young athletes to pursue their passions.
L. Johnson Singh, her coach, expressed pride in Sahoo’s achievements. “I could never have imagined that the Prime Minister would speak with our Rashmita Sahoo. We were overjoyed, and everyone congratulated her,” he said. Singh emphasized Sahoo’s potential, stating, “As a coach, I am happier than she. She is very talented and deserves to reach great heights.”
A Bright Future Ahead
Rashmita Sahoo’s story serves as an inspiration to many, showcasing the determination and talent that can emerge from humble beginnings. With her sights set on the Asian Games, she continues to train diligently, aiming to elevate Indian canoeing on the international stage. Her achievements have not only brought her personal recognition but also shine a light on the support and opportunities available to athletes in India.
As the countdown to the Asian Games continues, Sahoo’s journey illustrates the potential of young athletes in the nation, marking her as a figure to watch in the world of sports.
