Contemporary Music Shines in Baku: First Performance of “Con moto”
A remarkable concert featuring contemporary compositions took place at the International Mugham Center in Baku, Azerbaijan, on December 4, 2023. The event showcased the Cadenza Contemporary Orchestra alongside musicians from the Baku Contemporary Music Society, performing the program titled “Con moto.” This concert marked a significant milestone as it included several works that were presented in Azerbaijan for the first time.
The evening featured an exceptional array of musical compositions, captivating the audience with a blend of styles and eras. Notable pieces included “Sounds of Echo” by Volodymyr Runchak and the poignant quartet “In Memory of Indira Gandhi” by Chary Nurymov. The program also highlighted “Preludes No. 2 and No. 7” by Gara Garayev, arranged beautifully by Lala Pirieva.
Special attention was given to Benjamin Yusupov‘s composition “Con moto” and John Tavener‘s “The Lamb,” the latter arranged by Ayaz Gambarli. The variety in the performances provided a striking contrast, ranging from Runchak’s emotional intensity to Tavener’s spiritual resonance. The chamber intimacy of Nurymov’s quartet was complemented by the expressive virtuosity of Garayev’s pieces.
The Cadenza Contemporary Orchestra displayed exceptional talent throughout the concert, and their collaboration with the Baku Contemporary Music Society brought additional dynamism to the evening. Each performance unfolded with careful attention to detail, allowing the audience to appreciate the depth of each composition.
As the concert concluded, thunderous applause filled the venue, underscoring the unique opportunity for attendees to experience such significant works in Azerbaijan. The event was well-supported by media partners including Azernews, Trend, Day, and Milli, contributing to the success of this cultural milestone.
This concert not only celebrated the rich tapestry of contemporary music but also highlighted Azerbaijan’s growing importance in the global music scene. As audiences continue to embrace diverse musical expressions, events like “Con moto” pave the way for further artistic exploration and collaboration.
