FBI Arrests Suspect Linked to Pipe Bombs Before Capitol Riot
US authorities have apprehended a suspect believed to have planted pipe bombs in Washington, D.C., on the eve of the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot. According to two officials briefed on the investigation, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) arrested the individual in Virginia on December 4, 2023. This development follows a lengthy search that included the release of surveillance footage and a substantial reward.
Details of the Incident
The FBI had offered a reward of US$500,000 for information leading to the suspect’s arrest, receiving hundreds of tips over the years. Surveillance video from January 5, 2021, captured the individual placing a bomb near a bench outside the Democratic National Committee headquarters and another at the Republican National Committee building. Both locations are situated close to the Capitol where the riot occurred.
On January 6, 2021, supporters of then-President Donald Trump stormed the Capitol in an attempt to disrupt the certification of Joe Biden‘s victory in the 2020 presidential election. The bombs were discovered on that same day, but fortunately, they did not detonate as police successfully deactivated them.
Legal Proceedings and Context
The suspect is expected to make an initial court appearance in Washington, D.C., following his arrest. A Justice Department official confirmed the apprehension, stating, “We have him.” The events surrounding the January 6 riot resulted in significant violence, with approximately 140 police officers assaulted and damage estimated at over US$2.8 million.
Following the riot, former President Trump granted pardons to nearly all individuals who faced criminal charges related to the events that day, totaling around 1,500 people.
The investigation into the pipe bombs and the riot has remained a focal point for law enforcement and national security officials over the past few years, highlighting the ongoing ramifications of the events surrounding the Capitol riot.
