Singaporean actor and director Jack Neo has announced the return of his beloved character, Liang Po Po, in a new film titled Liang Po Po: The Comeback, set for release during the Chinese New Year in 2026. The news, unveiled on his Facebook page, has generated excitement among fans who fondly remember the character’s unique persona and catchphrase.

In his post, Neo shared the film’s teaser poster, depicting Liang Po Po with a keen eye on a wad of cash. He expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “Hoo hoo hoo, okay, I’ve held it in for so long. I didn’t tell you all because I wanted to give everyone a surprise. Hoo hoo hoo old friends, longtime fans, after 24 years, I’m meeting everyone again.” This revelation marks a significant moment for fans who have eagerly awaited the character’s return since her last appearance.

Legacy of Liang Po Po

The character of Liang Po Po first gained popularity on the Channel 8 sketch comedy series, Comedy Night, which aired from 1990 to 2003. Liang Po Po, known for her distinctive hunched posture and humorous antics, became a cultural icon during her time on the show. Alongside Neo, familiar faces such as Mark Lee, Henry Thia, Marcus Chin, and the late Moses Lim contributed to the show’s success.

In 1999, Liang Po Po transitioned to the big screen in a movie that achieved commercial success, grossing S$3.03 million. This film not only solidified her status as a beloved figure but also paved the way for Neo’s other popular character, Liang Ximei, who subsequently starred in her own television series and film.

On December 4, 2023, Neo further delighted fans by releasing the first teaser trailer for the upcoming film. The trailer concludes with Liang Po Po humorously questioning whether her hair looks messy, encapsulating the character’s lighthearted charm. The revival of Liang Po Po is expected to attract both long-time fans and a new generation of viewers, reflecting the enduring appeal of Neo’s creations in Singapore’s entertainment landscape.

As the release date approaches, excitement continues to build for what promises to be a nostalgic journey back to the world of Liang Po Po.
