Pritam Singh Accepts Court Ruling on Conviction, Vows to Serve Singapore
Leader of the Opposition Pritam Singh has expressed disappointment following the High Court’s ruling on December 4, 2023, which upheld his conviction for lying to the Committee of Privileges. Singh, who is also the chief of the Workers’ Party (WP), acknowledged that he had taken too long to respond to former party member Raeesah Khan‘s false statements made in parliament.
After paying a fine of S$14,000 (approximately US$10,800) for his two charges, Singh addressed reporters outside the Supreme Court. He emphasized his respect for the judiciary, stating, “First and foremost, the Supreme Court is a vital pillar of our constitutional framework.” Singh, a trained lawyer, articulated his acceptance of the ruling, saying he respects the judgment “fully and without reservation.”
Singh admitted to the Straits Times that he had delayed addressing Khan’s lie, taking responsibility for his actions. He remarked on the importance of maintaining integrity in opposition politics, asserting that political differences should not undermine the trust in judicial institutions. “Those differences do not extend to tearing the system down,” he added, reinforcing his commitment to conduct opposition politics responsibly.
The case originated in August 2021 when Khan falsely claimed in parliament that she had accompanied a rape survivor to file a police report. She later confessed in November 2021, prompting an investigation by the Committee of Privileges. Singh provided testimony to the committee in December 2021. In March 2024, he faced two charges for falsely asserting that he wanted Khan to clarify her statements. Following a trial earlier this year, Singh was found guilty, leading to his appeal, which concluded with the recent verdict.
Reflecting on the protracted nature of the case, Singh stated, “This has been a long journey.” He reiterated his dedication to fulfilling his responsibilities as a parliament member and to serving the people of Singapore. “My focus now is to continue serving Singaporeans and to speak up for them alongside my Workers’ Party colleagues,” he said.
In closing, Singh expressed gratitude to the public for their support throughout the ordeal. “Your support reminds me of the importance of the work that we do, and how important it is that your trust is not taken for granted,” he remarked. He reaffirmed his commitment to continue serving Singapore and its citizens diligently.
