Azerbaijani Leader Welcomes U.S. Ethnic Understanding President
On December 4, 2023, Sheikhulislam Pashazade, the Chairperson of the Caucasus Muslims Office, hosted a delegation led by Rabbi Marc Schneier, President of the Foundation for Ethnic Understanding (FFEU), in Baku, Azerbaijan. This meeting underscored Azerbaijan’s commitment to fostering interfaith dialogue and multicultural coexistence.
Promoting Multiculturalism and Tolerance
During the meeting, Pashazade highlighted the unique multicultural lifestyle of Azerbaijan and the Azerbaijani government’s role in international interfaith dialogue, largely attributed to the initiatives of President Ilham Aliyev. He emphasized that Azerbaijan is a nation where individuals of various ethnicities and religions, including the Jewish community, live together in harmony, forming a united society.
The support provided by the Azerbaijani state to the Jewish community, along with other religious and ethnic groups, was praised by Pashazade. He noted the active involvement of Jews in Azerbaijan’s public life, reflecting the country’s dedication to inclusivity. This engagement serves as a testament to Azerbaijan’s longstanding tradition of tolerance.
Pashazade expressed his satisfaction with recent developments in Azerbaijan, particularly following high-level discussions with U.S. religious and public leaders. He pointed to the historical significance of the Armenia-Azerbaijan peace protocol, which was signed in the White House with participation from U.S., Azerbaijani, and Armenian leaders. Pashazade asserted that this agreement would yield substantial benefits for both nations and the broader region.
Interfaith Harmony as a Global Model
The Azerbaijani official remarked that the U.S. delegation had observed the peaceful coexistence of diverse religious communities during their visit to Azerbaijan. He suggested that Azerbaijan’s exemplary model of interethnic and interfaith harmony could serve as a valuable lesson for other nations, including the United States.
Pashazade also acknowledged Rabbi Marc Schneier‘s father, Rabbi Arthur Schneier, the President of the Appeal of Conscience Foundation. Their nearly five-decade-long friendship has been marked by collaboration on various initiatives. He recalled Arthur Schneier’s meetings with Azerbaijan’s National Leader, Heydar Aliyev, noting the elder Schneier’s consistent advocacy for justice and truth, particularly during and after the Second Karabakh War.
In addition to discussing historical ties, Pashazade informed the delegation about the large-scale reconstruction efforts currently underway in territories liberated from occupation, referred to as the ‘Great Return’. He emphasized the moral mission of religious leaders to promote peace and highlighted the contrast between the constructive peacebuilding efforts of political leaders and the destructive propaganda propagated by the Armenian Church and diaspora.
Rabbi Schneier expressed gratitude for the meeting and acknowledged Azerbaijan’s contributions to global intercultural dialogue through both state initiatives and its religious leaders. He stressed the importance of international forums hosted by Azerbaijan that consistently bring together prominent religious figures from around the globe.
Following their discussions, Pashazade responded to questions from members of the U.S. delegation, further elaborating on Azerbaijan’s commitment to promoting interfaith understanding.
