Tom Aspinall Diagnosed with Rare Eye Condition After Fight Incident
British mixed martial artist Tom Aspinall has been diagnosed with Brown’s syndrome in both eyes following an accidental eye poke that resulted in a no-contest during his UFC heavyweight title defense against Ciryl Gane in October 2023. Aspinall shared a medical report on his Instagram account detailing his current health challenges, including double vision, reduced eye motility, visual function impairment, and significant field loss.
According to the report, the condition known as Brown’s syndrome affects the upward movement of one eye. This rare eye disorder may require further medical intervention, such as targeted periocular steroid injections or surgical options, if symptoms do not improve. The report underscores the seriousness of Aspinall’s situation, highlighting the potential need for additional treatment to address ongoing motility issues.
Current Training Status and Future Plans
In a video posted on his YouTube channel, the 32-year-old fighter explained that he is currently not training and is adhering to medical advice. “We’ve got to see how it goes over the next few weeks. I’m not in the gym training at the moment,” Aspinall stated. He emphasized the importance of following the doctor’s orders and taking the necessary time to recover fully before returning to the sport.
Aspinall expressed a strong desire to compete against Gane once he receives medical clearance. “I’ve got to be 100 percent right. So whenever the eye’s good to go, that’s when I’ll do it,” he affirmed. His determination to return to the octagon reflects his commitment to his career despite the significant setback.
The news raises questions about the impact of Aspinall’s condition on his fighting career and the timeline for his return. Fans and fellow fighters alike will be watching closely as he navigates this challenging period in his professional life.
