Indian police apprehended a man on October 25, 2023, for allegedly stalking and inappropriately touching two Australian cricketers participating in the ICC Women’s World Cup. The incident occurred in Indore when the players were en route to a café from their hotel. According to police officer Rajesh Dandotiya, the complaint was lodged by the Australian team’s security, prompting immediate action.

The suspect, a 30-year-old with a prior criminal record, reportedly followed the players for around 800 metres before approaching them inappropriately. Police acted swiftly, registering a case and identifying the accused within six hours of the incident.

Cricket Australia confirmed the incident but refrained from disclosing the identities of the affected players. In a statement, the organization emphasized that the matter was reported by team security to the police, who are currently managing the situation.

Devajit Saikia, honorary secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), labeled the event as “a deeply regrettable and isolated incident.” He assured that the BCCI would review existing safety protocols and take measures to enhance security during the tournament.

A report from The Times of India indicated that one of the players sent an urgent message to the team’s security manager, stating, “There is a guy following us trying to grab us.” Authorities responded promptly, ensuring the players were escorted back to their hotel safely.

The man has been charged with inappropriate behavior and stalking. In the aftermath of this incident, the Australian team faced South Africa in their pool match in Indore, with players and officials focusing on the game while remaining vigilant about their safety.

As the tournament progresses, both the BCCI and Cricket Australia are committed to ensuring the well-being of all participants, reinforcing their dedication to maintaining a secure environment for athletes and staff alike.
