At least 30 people died in Beijing due to severe flooding caused by heavy rainfall, according to the official Xinhua News Agency. The fatalities were concentrated in the mountainous northern districts, with 28 deaths reported in Miyun and two in Yanqing. The intense rainfall began over the weekend and escalated on July 28, 2023, leading to unprecedented conditions across the Chinese capital.

The deluge resulted in rainfall accumulation of up to 543.4 mm in northern areas of the city. In response to the flooding, authorities relocated over 80,000 residents to safer locations. As of midnight on July 28, key infrastructure including roads and communication networks sustained damage, leaving 136 villages without power.

Chinese President Xi Jinping has urged for “all-out” search and rescue operations to minimize further casualties. The government issued its highest-level rain and flood alerts, advising residents to remain indoors for their safety.

Emergency services are working diligently to assess the extent of the damage and provide necessary assistance to affected communities. The situation remains fluid, with rescue efforts focused on the hardest-hit areas. As the city grapples with the aftermath of this significant weather event, authorities are prioritizing the restoration of essential services and support for displaced individuals.

Officials are also monitoring additional weather forecasts, as further rain could exacerbate the current crisis. The response to this natural disaster highlights the ongoing challenges faced by urban planners and disaster management teams in mitigating the impacts of extreme weather events in densely populated regions like Beijing.
