dnata Unveils Ambitious Plan to Automate Airside Operations at DWC

The Dubai National Air Travel Agency, known as dnata, is taking significant steps towards automating airside vehicle operations at Dubai World Central Airport (DWC). At the recent Dubai Airshow 2025, dnata CEO Steve Allen revealed plans to expand the use of autonomous vehicles, starting with six electric baggage tractors introduced earlier this year. This initiative aims to enhance efficiency in baggage transport and streamline operations at what is often referred to as Al Maktoum International Airport.

In July 2023, dnata announced the rollout of the initial fleet of six autonomous electric baggage tractors at DWC, representing an investment of AED 6 million (approximately $1.6 million). These vehicles are designed to transport baggage between the terminal and aircraft parking stands at speeds of up to 15 km/h (9.3 mph), towing up to four baggage containers simultaneously. This innovation alleviates the workload for airside staff who typically manage baggage transfers under tight time constraints.

Steve Allen explained that while the autonomous tractors currently operate with human oversight, dnata is close to obtaining regulatory approval for full autonomy. “We’ve still got people sitting in the vehicle, making sure that the vehicle has actually learned all the right rules,” Allen stated. The aim is to achieve a Level 4 autonomy status, which would allow the vehicles to operate without any human intervention in controlled environments by early 2026.

Transforming Airside Operations with Technology

The introduction of autonomous vehicles at DWC marks a significant milestone in the aviation sector. According to dnata, this initiative is part of a broader strategy to create “the world’s first live autonomous operation” in airside vehicle management. The company is leveraging the EZTow model developed by TractEasy, which has been designed specifically for operational efficiency in the airport environment.

Allen emphasized that the technology can be adapted to various vehicle types, noting, “once you’ve established what the protocols are, and the technology you need to follow those protocols, it doesn’t matter what the size of the vehicle is.” This adaptability suggests a future where not just baggage tractors, but also other airside vehicles, could be automated.

As dnata moves forward with its ambitious plans, the company envisions a broader deployment of autonomous vehicles at DWC. Allen mentioned that the initial six electric baggage tractors are just the beginning. The same technology could easily be applied to other vehicles, including buses and high loaders, potentially transforming the way airside operations are conducted.

With the expected attainment of Level 4 certification by early 2026, dnata aims to set a benchmark in the aviation industry for autonomous operations.
