Attack at Taipei Subway Stations Injures Multiple Bystanders
Several individuals sustained injuries following an attack at two subway stations in Taipei on December 19, 2023. According to Taiwan Premier Cho Jung-tai, the incident involved a suspect who released petrol and smoke bombs at Taipei Station before launching a knife attack at MRT Zhongshan Station. Local media reported that at least nine people were injured, with four in critical condition.
The attacks occurred in the evening between the M7 and M8 exits of Taipei Station. In a Facebook post, Cho described the suspect as wearing a mask and deliberately throwing multiple petrol bombs and smoke bombs before attacking bystanders with a knife. “This act has caused many injuries,” he stated, emphasizing the severity of the situation.
In response to the violence, security measures have been increased at both subway stations and their surrounding areas. Taiwan President Lai Ching-te also addressed the situation through social media, confirming that police and relevant authorities are enhancing security across the island. He assured the public that thorough investigations will be conducted to determine the motive behind the attacks. Lai urged residents to refrain from sharing unverified information during this time.
The official Central News Agency reported that after the attack, the suspect is believed to have taken his own life. However, details regarding the motive for these violent actions remain unclear. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the tragedy, as the community grapples with the aftermath of this shocking event.
