Catching 9 Concerts in 8 Cities: A Music Lover’s Journey
A music enthusiast recently completed an ambitious journey, attending nine concerts across eight cities in just eleven days. The whirlwind trip spanned locations in the UK, Italy, Germany, and the Czech Republic, showcasing the vibrant concert scene in Europe during the summer months. This adventure was the culmination of six months of planning and a desire to experience the summer festival atmosphere that the continent is known for.
The trip began at the O2 Academy Brixton in London, where the author faced an unexpected challenge: no air conditioning in the venue as summer heat surged. Despite the discomfort, the energy of LCD Soundsystem rekindled spirits. The performance was a thrilling reminder of the joy that live music brings, even when the conditions are less than ideal. As the band played “New York, I Love You But You Are Bringing Me Down,” the decision to leave early for rest was made, especially with a busy schedule ahead.
Planning for this musical quest evolved from an initial focus on just two concerts: Bruce Springsteen’s “Land of Hope and Dreams” tour and the Forever Now festival. As more artists announced summer dates, the plan expanded to include numerous performances. The summer season in Europe is notoriously busy for concerts, making it easier to find multiple events on the same night in major cities.
Ticketing Challenges and Strategies
Navigating the European ticketing landscape proved to be a significant hurdle. For instance, using Italy’s TicketOne platform was complicated due to language barriers. The app lacked an option to switch languages, so many users resorted to screenshots and translation tools. The experience was similar when purchasing a ticket for Pulp at Co-op Live in Manchester, where accessing tickets through the venue’s app became an ordeal for many.
The resale market in Europe offers more security compared to some regions, with platforms like Ticketmaster allowing users to resell tickets directly. Event organizers often cap resale prices to protect fans from scalping. However, challenges remain, as encountered in a frustrating attempt to sell a ticket through a German resale site, which mandated physical ticket delivery.
When a Nine Inch Nails concert in Milan sold out, the search for tickets led to an Italian fan group on Telegram. A helpful member alerted the author to a new batch of tickets released, highlighting the community spirit among music fans.
Overcoming the Unexpected
Traveling across multiple cities comes with its set of unpredictable challenges. Train schedules in Europe can often be unreliable, as experienced with numerous cancellations while traveling on Deutsche Bahn. Timing was tight, but reaching venues just before performances highlighted the importance of flexibility.
Local customs can also pose challenges. After the Forever Now festival, a decision to use a ride-hailing app instead of joining a taxi queue resulted in confusion and delays. Ultimately, walking back to the hotel in the dark became a necessary but risky choice, especially with a nearly drained phone battery.
Weather dynamics can add to the experience, as shown when the festival’s forecast predicted a scorching day that turned into overcast and chilly conditions. Dressing for summer only to face a cold snap was another reminder of the unpredictability of outdoor events.
Despite minor setbacks, the thrill of immersing in live performances from beloved artists is unparalleled. The experience of sharing songs with fellow fans, witnessing iconic bands in unique venues, and the sheer excitement of being part of a live music community made the journey worthwhile. The exhaustion of packing and traveling was overshadowed by the joy of discovering new music and reconnecting with cherished acts.
For any music lover, this journey across Europe is a testament to the power of live music and the unforgettable memories it creates.
