Attack at Taipei Subway Injures Multiple Bystanders, Police Investigate
Multiple people were injured in a violent incident at two subway stations in Taipei on December 19, 2023. According to Taiwan’s Premier, Cho Jung-tai, the chaos began when an individual released petrol and smoke bombs at Taipei Station and subsequently attacked bystanders at MRT Zhongshan Station. Initial reports indicate that at least nine individuals were wounded during the knife attack, with four in critical condition.
The attacks occurred in the evening, specifically between the M7 and M8 exits of Taipei Station. In a Facebook post, Cho described how the suspect, who was wearing a mask, deliberately threw multiple petrol bombs and smoke bombs before launching a random assault on those nearby. The premier confirmed that security measures have been intensified at both subway stations and their surrounding areas to ensure public safety.
In a related statement, Taiwan’s President Lai Ching-te emphasized the government’s commitment to security. He announced that police and relevant authorities have increased surveillance across the island and assured the public that thorough investigations would be conducted. Lai also urged residents to refrain from sharing unverified information regarding the incident.
The suspect is believed to have taken his own life after the attacks, as reported by the official Central News Agency. While investigations are ongoing, the motive behind the attacks remains unclear.
This incident has raised concerns about public safety in Taiwan, prompting calls for increased vigilance. As more details emerge, authorities are working diligently to piece together the sequence of events that led to this tragic occurrence.
