Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has called on voters in Sabah to evaluate candidates based on their performance rather than racial affiliations or emotions. Speaking on November 15, 2023, Anwar emphasized the need for collaboration and urged voters to choose representatives who demonstrate a commitment to addressing pressing public issues such as water, electricity, and education, particularly in rural areas.

In comments reported by Malaysian news outlets, Anwar stated, “Do not act out of anger. Do not follow misguided racial sentiments that will not keep the country safe.” He highlighted that Malaysia’s multicultural harmony is crucial for attracting global investment, asserting, “The world looks at us for investment because this country is peaceful.” He encouraged voters to remember the diverse ethnic groups in Malaysia, including the Malay, Chinese, Iban, Kadazan, Murut, Dayak, Bugis, and Indian communities, who coexist peacefully.

Record Participation in Sabah State Election

The stage is set for the upcoming 17th Sabah State Election, with a record-breaking 596 candidates competing for 73 seats. More than 1.7 million Sabahans are expected to vote on November 29, 2023, with early voting scheduled for November 25. Among the candidates are 74 independents and representatives from various political parties, including Parti Warisan (73 candidates), Parti Impian Sabah (72), Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (55), and Barisan Nasional (45). Anwar’s Pakatan Harapan alliance has nominated 22 candidates for this election.

This election marks the first in a series of significant state polls, which will also include elections in Melaka, Johor, and Sarawak. Political analysts predict a highly competitive race, with multi-cornered contests expected, including a constituency with as many as 14 candidates.

Anwar aims for the Sabah election to produce a state government that aligns with federal interests, particularly regarding the state’s entitlement to a 40 percent special grant. The Prime Minister also announced plans to increase parliamentary representation for Sabah and Sarawak ahead of Malaysia’s 16th General Election, which must be conducted by 2028.

Anwar Defends His Commitment to Sabah

In his speech, Anwar defended his presence in Sabah, asserting that he is committed to protecting the rights and future of its residents. He emphasized that, throughout his political career, he has not personally benefited from Sabah’s resources. “I have been a minister for more than 10 years, but I have never taken a single log from Sabah. I have not taken any contracts, and I have not taken any land,” Anwar stated. “I come to look after the people, to carry out the trust.”

Joining Anwar in his efforts, Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, Malaysia’s Deputy Prime Minister and leader of the Barisan Nasional coalition, noted that their alliance with Pakatan Harapan has strengthened their position in this year’s election. He explained that the coalition has gained traction in constituencies with significant non-Muslim and Chinese populations, which have historically been challenging for them. “When we collaborate with PH in areas with non-Muslim Bumiputera and Chinese voters, we find that they are more receptive,” Zahid said during a press conference in Kota Kinabalu.

As the election approaches, both leaders remain focused on fostering a political environment that prioritizes the needs of Sabahans and promotes unity across the diverse communities within the state.
