A 55-year-old lorry driver is set to face charges in court following a collision that resulted in significant damage to the Central Expressway (CTE) tunnel in Singapore. The incident, which occurred on November 8, 2024, involved the driver operating a lorry equipped with a crane attachment. Police received notification of the collision around noon, shortly after the vehicle entered the slip road from Cairnhill Road into the tunnel.

Investigations revealed that the crane boom of the lorry was raised when it struck the height limit barrier, which subsequently led to substantial damage to both the barrier and the mechanical and electrical systems of the tunnel. The estimated cost of the damage reached approximately S$1.4 million (around US$1.09 million).

Charges and Possible Penalties

The Singapore Police Force reported that the driver was arrested on the same day of the incident, facing charges for two serious offenses: operating a heavy motor vehicle that collided with a building or structure, and driving a heavy vehicle exceeding 4.5 meters in height without the required police escort. This marks the second time the driver has committed both of these offenses.

Under Singaporean law, driving a heavy vehicle over the height limit without police escort carries a mandatory jail term ranging from one to three years and a fine of up to S$2,000. For repeat offenders, the penalties increase, with potential jail sentences of up to five years and fines reaching up to S$5,000. Additionally, drivers found guilty of colliding with buildings or structures may face fines of up to S$5,000 and imprisonment for up to two years, or both.

Warnings from Authorities

The police have reiterated the importance of adhering to regulations regarding vehicle height limits. Drivers and owners of heavy vehicles exceeding 4.5 meters must secure police or auxiliary police escorts to navigate safely within the city.

“Drivers should plan their routes carefully to avoid height-restricted roads and structures,” a police spokesperson stated. “The Traffic Police take a serious view of such offenses as they compromise road infrastructure and endanger other road users.” Authorities have pledged to take firm action against motorists who neglect to obtain the necessary escorts or cause damage to public infrastructure.

As the legal proceedings move forward, this incident serves as a reminder of the critical importance of compliance with transportation regulations to ensure the safety of all road users and the integrity of urban infrastructure.
