South Africa’s cricket team, the reigning World Test champions, is set to face India in a two-match Test series starting on October 6, 2023, at Eden Gardens in Kolkata. Captain Temba Bavuma expressed a strong desire for his team to solidify their status and demonstrate their credentials against a formidable opponent. This series marks an opportunity for South Africa to prove that their recent success in the World Test Championship (WTC) final was not merely a one-off achievement.

In June, South Africa clinched their first major title in decades by defeating Australia at Lord’s. Bavuma emphasized the importance of this series, stating, “We’re known as the champions, the current champions at this point. We have a lovely opportunity now coming up against India in their own conditions.” He acknowledged that proving their worth is essential, especially as not everyone considers the Proteas the best Test team globally.

The captain aims to silence critics by leading his team back to the WTC final. “We started the 2025-27 Test cycle with the ambition of seeing ourselves in the final again,” said Bavuma, who is making a comeback from a calf injury. He highlighted the team’s aspirations, noting, “We have our own goals. We know where we want to be as a team, and we know at what point we want to start measuring ourselves up.”

India’s Challenge and WTC Implications

The significance of the series extends beyond national pride, as it plays a crucial role in the WTC standings. Shubman Gill, the captain of the Indian team, acknowledged the stakes involved. Currently ranked third in the standings, India has twice finished as WTC runners-up. Gill stated, “These two tests are going to be very important to qualify for the WTC final. They are the reigning World Test champions and we know that it won’t be easy.”

As India prepares for the challenge, they are also aware of the difficult moments that lie ahead. “There will be difficult moments. But as a team, we have shown that whenever there are difficult moments, we have handled them well,” Gill added. The team will benefit from the return of wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant, while Dhruv Jurel, who previously kept wicket against the West Indies, will contribute as a specialist batter.

The transition from limited-overs cricket to Test format poses its own challenges. India recently returned home after a series in Australia, and Gill reflected on the quick shift. “But as a professional cricketer, you know that these challenges will be thrown at you. The way you tackle them defines your greatness,” he said.

As the countdown to the opening match continues, both teams are focused on not just the series win, but also the implications it holds for their journeys in the ongoing WTC cycle. The cricketing world will be watching closely as South Africa and India clash, with both teams eager to assert their dominance on the international stage.
