Smith Returns to Lead Australia’s All-Pace Attack on Boxing Day
Australia has made a significant decision ahead of the Boxing Day Test against England by including four fast bowlers in their 12-man squad. This marks the return of Steve Smith, who missed the previous match due to vertigo. The squad does not feature spinner Todd Murphy, brought in as a replacement for Nathan Lyon, highlighting Australia’s strategy to focus on pace in potentially beneficial conditions.
Fast bowler Jhye Richardson has been reinstated after recovering from shoulder surgery and showing commendable form in domestic cricket. Richardson has not played a Test match since December 2021, where he achieved a remarkable five-wicket haul against England, contributing to a 275-run victory for his team. Joining him in the pace attack are Brendan Doggett, who played in the first two Tests of the series, and Michael Neser, who participated in the pink-ball Test.
In a statement to reporters on December 25, Smith discussed the playing conditions, noting, “The pitch has 10mm of grass, quite furry, quite green. I dare say it’s going to offer similar conditions to today, quite cold and overcast.” He anticipates that the weather will favor fast bowling, suggesting that the pitch will provide “a fair bit of assistance for the seam bowlers.”
The inclusion of veteran Usman Khawaja is another highlight, as he performed admirably in the previous Test, scoring 82 and 40 after stepping in as a last-minute replacement for Smith. His performance has solidified his position in the batting lineup, with Smith acknowledging his ability to absorb pressure and deliver when it counts. “He’s got that No. 5 spot right now,” Smith remarked, praising Khawaja’s contributions.
Australia has already secured the Ashes, leading the five-Test series 3-0. Coach and selectors are confident that the all-pace strategy will continue to yield successful results against England.
The Australian squad for the fourth Test includes:
– Travis Head
– Jake Weatherald
– Marnus Labuschagne
– Steve Smith (c)
– Usman Khawaja
– Alex Carey (wk)
– Cameron Green
– Mitchell Starc
– Scott Boland
– Brendan Doggett
– Michael Neser
– Jhye Richardson
As Australia prepares to take the field, all eyes will be on the pace bowlers to see if they can make the most of the conditions and maintain their dominance in the series.
