Steve Smith Returns as Australia Fields All-Pace Attack for Boxing Day Test
Australia’s cricket team has announced its squad for the Boxing Day Test against England, featuring the return of Steve Smith and a strategic all-pace bowling lineup. The match, taking place on December 26, 2023, at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, will see the inclusion of four fast bowlers, sidelining spinner Todd Murphy, who was called up to replace Nathan Lyon.
Fast bowler Jhye Richardson makes his comeback to the Test format after recovering from shoulder surgery. He last played in December 2021 against England, where he shone with a five-wicket haul, contributing to a commanding victory. His inclusion follows impressive performances in domestic cricket, indicating a strong readiness to contribute at the international level once again.
The Australian squad for the fourth Test includes Brendan Doggett and Michael Neser, both of whom have been integral in previous matches. Smith, who missed the last Test in Adelaide due to vertigo, expressed confidence in the pace-heavy strategy, stating, “You just got to play what surface you’re presented with.” He noted the pitch’s condition, highlighting its 10mm of grass and the expected cold, overcast weather, which should provide favorable conditions for seam bowlers.
Smith added, “This one looks like it’s going to offer a fair bit of assistance for the seam bowlers, and the weather throughout the week looks conducive for that too.” His insight reflects the team’s careful planning to exploit the pitch dynamics effectively.
Meanwhile, veteran Usman Khawaja has retained his spot in the lineup after stepping in for Smith during the previous Test. His solid performance of 82 and 40 has earned him accolades, with Smith acknowledging, “It was fortunate that Usman was able to come in and play the way he did in that first innings.” Currently, Khawaja holds the No. 5 batting position, while Cameron Green‘s versatility bolsters the team at No. 7.
Australia’s current standing in the series is impressive, having already secured the Ashes with a 3-0 lead in the five-Test series. The team is eager to maintain momentum against their rivals in this high-stakes match.
The Australian squad for the fourth Test includes: Travis Head, Jake Weatherald, Marnus Labuschagne, Steve Smith (c), Usman Khawaja, Alex Carey (wk), Cameron Green, Mitchell Starc, Scott Boland, Brendan Doggett, Michael Neser, and Jhye Richardson.
As the team prepares for what promises to be an exciting contest, all eyes will be on the pace attack and how it adapts to the conditions at the MCG.
