Mahrez Shines with Two Goals in Algeria’s Victory Over Sudan
In a decisive performance, Algeria’s captain Riyad Mahrez scored two goals in a 3-0 victory against Sudan during the Africa Cup of Nations Group E match held in Rabat, Morocco, on December 24. This win marked a strong start for Algeria in the tournament, which they hope will restore their reputation after disappointing exits in previous years.
Mahrez, who currently plays for Al Ahli in Saudi Arabia after his transfer from Manchester City, emphasized that his goals were not a reaction to criticism he has faced. “This wasn’t about answering criticism,” he told reporters following the match. “I’m used to it. My reply is to concentrate on my game on the pitch.” Alongside Mahrez’s contributions, Ibrahim Maza also found the net, scoring his first international goal.
At the age of 34, Mahrez has solidified his status as Algeria’s all-time top scorer in the Africa Cup of Nations, now boasting a total of eight goals in the tournament’s history. Following Algeria’s triumph in 2019, the team has struggled, failing to progress beyond the group stage in the last two editions. They are now determined to improve their performance and advance in this year’s competition.
Reflecting on the team’s strategy, Mahrez noted their intention to play confidently and without overthinking. “We came in with a clear plan to win this one and the rest of our group matches to make the path easier,” he said. The victory places Algeria at the top of Group E with three points, setting the stage for their next match against Burkina Faso on Sunday.
Algeria’s recent history has been challenging, having missed out on the last two World Cups. However, they have secured qualification for the expanded 2026 World Cup, which will be co-hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada. Mahrez’s success with Al Ahli, including winning the rebranded AFC Champions League Elite this year, has contributed to his confidence. He highlighted the importance of maintaining momentum, stating, “It’s good to score — it brings confidence — but the team has to keep lifting our level so we’re more consistent.”
As they prepare for their upcoming match, Algeria aims to build on their current success and ensure a stable performance. Earlier on the same day, Burkina Faso triumphed over Equatorial Guinea, scoring twice in stoppage time to secure a 2-1 victory despite being down to ten men. This sets up an exciting encounter as Algeria looks to solidify their position in the group.
With Mahrez leading the charge, Algeria’s supporters hope for a return to form as they pursue success in the Africa Cup of Nations.
