Lyon Dominates Maccabi Tel Aviv, Nottingham Forest Thrives at Home
Olympique Lyonnais secured a commanding 6-0 victory against Maccabi Tel Aviv in the Europa League, propelling them to the top of the group standings. Corentin Tolisso shone with a remarkable hat-trick during the match, which was held at the TSC Arena in Backa Topola, Serbia. Meanwhile, Nottingham Forest continued their impressive form with a 3-0 win over Malmo at home, marking their third consecutive victory across all competitions.
Lyon’s Stellar Performance Secures Top Spot
Lyon’s triumph brought their total points to 12, placing them level with second-placed Midtjylland and Aston Villa, who both achieved victories in their respective matches. Midtjylland fell 2-1 to AS Roma, while Aston Villa defeated Young Boys by the same scoreline earlier in the afternoon. Lyon established an early lead in the fourth minute when Abner Vinicius capitalized on Maccabi’s defensive lapse, tapping in a cross at the back post.
The French side extended their lead after 25 minutes with Tolisso heading in a well-placed cross. Just ten minutes later, Moussa Niakhate converted a penalty following a foul by Sagiv Jehezkel on Pavel Sulc. Following the break, Tolisso scored two quick goals, solidifying Lyon’s dominance, before Adam Karabec rounded off the scoring just past the hour mark. Maccabi Tel Aviv’s struggles deepened when Jehezkel received a red card in added time, leaving the Israeli side languishing in the group with only one point.
Forest Maintains Winning Streak Against Malmo
In a different fixture, Nottingham Forest manager Sean Dyche made significant changes to his lineup, fielding seven new players from the squad that secured a 3-0 victory against Liverpool in the Premier League. Despite the alterations, Forest exhibited a strong performance against Malmo, who posed minimal threat throughout the match. The two teams had a historic encounter in the 1979 European Cup final, which Forest won 1-0, but this meeting reinforced Forest’s current superiority.
Ryan Yates opened the scoring for the hosts in the 27th minute, finishing a loose ball after Nikola Milenkovic’s cross was blocked. Forest continued to press for a second goal, with goalkeeper Melker Ellborg making several crucial saves. Just before halftime, Kalimuendo scored from a rebound, marking his first goal for Forest. The hosts maintained their momentum, and in the 59th minute, Milenkovic scored from close range after a corner was poorly cleared, sealing a comfortable 3-0 victory that lifted Forest to 16th in the standings with eight points.
Rangers, who began the day at the bottom of the table, managed to earn their first point of the campaign in a 1-1 draw against Braga. James Tavernier converted a penalty in added time of the first half, but despite Braga’s Rodrigo Zalazar being sent off in the 61st minute, they equalized through Gabri Martinez. Rangers also faced a setback when Mohamed Diomande received a red card in added time, leaving the match level.
Real Betis climbed to fifth in the standings following a 2-1 victory over Utrecht. Cucho Hernandez and Abde Ezzalzouli scored for Betis, with Utrecht managing to pull one back in the second half through Miguel Rodriguez’s audacious long-range effort. The Spanish side held on for the win, bringing their tally to 11 points.
The results from these matches highlight the competitive nature of the Europa League, as teams vie for top positions in their respective groups.
