Bavuma Steers South Africa to Strong Position Against India
South Africa’s cricket team showcased resilience on the first day of the second Test against India, reaching 156 for two at lunch in Guwahati on March 16, 2024. While opener Ryan Rickleton departed after a promising start, captain Temba Bavuma remained solid at the crease, contributing significantly to the visitors’ innings.
The match, held at the inaugural Barsapara Cricket Stadium, saw Rickleton and Aiden Markram form an 82-run opening partnership. Rickleton, who scored 35 runs, fell victim to spinner Kuldeep Yadav after edging the ball. Despite this setback, Bavuma, who had the only half-century in the previous Test, was batting at 36, with Tristan Stubbs supporting him on 32 as the lunch break approached.
Due to the early sunrise and deteriorating light conditions in northeast India, the match organizers flipped the traditional refreshment schedule. This change resulted in the tea break occurring before lunch, a first for this venue. Bavuma, eager to capitalize on the conditions, chose to bat first on a pitch that appeared to have ample grass coverage and no visible cracks.
Markram enjoyed a stroke of luck early in his innings, surviving a catch chance when KL Rahul dropped an edge off Jasprit Bumrah at slip while he was on four runs. India’s stand-in captain, Rishabh Pant, took charge in the absence of the injured Shubman Gill. He introduced spin in the 14th over, but Washington Sundar could not break the partnership.
As the innings progressed, Pant opted to bring Bumrah back for a final over before tea, a decision that proved effective. Markram’s innings ended with a thick inside edge, sending the ball crashing into the stumps. Following the break, Rickleton struggled to build on his score and was caught behind off Kuldeep’s bowling.
Despite the loss of two wickets, Bavuma remained composed and compact in his defence, while Stubbs displayed aggression against the Indian spinners. Their partnership, which stands at 74 runs for the unbroken third wicket, positions South Africa favorably as they continue their innings in a crucial match for the series.
As the tension builds in the Test, South Africa aims to capitalize on their strong start while India looks to regroup and mount a challenge in the remaining sessions.
