Australia Extends Lead to 116 Runs in Second Ashes Test
Australia has built a commanding position at the Gabba, reaching 450 for eight at tea on December 6, 2023, during the third day of the second Ashes Test against England. This performance has extended their lead to a substantial 116 runs over the visitors, who are facing mounting pressure as the match progresses.
Wicketkeeper Alex Carey contributed significantly to Australia’s score, notching a half-century before being dismissed for 63 runs. Tailender Mitchell Starc remained at the crease with a score of 46 not out, while fellow tailender Scott Boland supported him on seven. The conditions were hot and sunny, presenting challenges for both teams.
Australia resumed play on day three with a score of 378 for six, looking to solidify their advantage after replying to England’s first innings total of 334. The partnership between Carey and tailender Michael Neser, which yielded 54 runs, came to an end when England captain Ben Stokes had Neser caught behind for 16 runs.
Carey’s efforts included a further 33 runs alongside Starc before he fell to Gus Atkinson, who claimed his first wicket of the series with Carey’s dismissal. As play continued, Starc and Boland managed to establish an unbroken 34-run partnership, frustrating the English bowlers as they approached the tea break.
With England’s chances of salvaging the match diminishing, the team will need to act decisively after the break. They must quickly capture Australia’s final wickets and make significant progress into the deficit, especially with the challenge of facing the pink ball under lights in the day-night format.
Australia currently leads the five-match series 1-0, following their eight-wicket victory in Perth. The ongoing contest at the Gabba is critical for both teams as they strive to gain momentum in this historic rivalry.
