Azerbaijan to Launch New Innovation Hubs in Universities by Year-End
Azerbaijan is set to establish several innovation centers in higher education institutions across the country by the end of the year, according to Farid Osmanov, Chairman of the Innovation and Digital Development Agency (IDDA). During the “Demo-Day” event for the “Green and Digital Silk Road” international acceleration program, Osmanov emphasized the government’s commitment to enhancing digitalization and innovation initiatives within Azerbaijan.
The event was part of the “Startup School 3” project, organized by the Enterprise Azerbaijan portal under the auspices of the Economic Reforms Analysis and Communication Center. Osmanov outlined that the IDDA’s primary objectives include improving the well-being of civil society, enhancing business processes, and ensuring the accessibility of public services. He stated, “With rapid technological development, the adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) solutions and digital tools is no longer a choice but a necessity.”
Establishment of Innovation Spaces
Osmanov revealed that innovation spaces are currently being created at universities in Baku, Sumgayit, and other higher education institutions throughout Azerbaijan. These spaces aim to serve as collaborative platforms for government agencies, academic institutions, startups, and business entities. By the end of the year, additional innovation centers are planned for more universities across the country.
“Our goal is to foster a culture of innovation and create an environment conducive to ecosystem development,” Osmanov explained. He emphasized that collaboration with universities and executing joint projects are vital components of this initiative. The overarching aim is to strengthen innovative thinking within society, engage youth and startups actively, and accelerate digital development in Azerbaijan.
Support for Startups and Venture Funds
Osmanov also highlighted the importance of partnerships with the private sector, noting the establishment of three venture funds that have supported over 30 startups to date. “Building connections and ensuring access to both domestic and international markets is extremely important,” he added. The IDDA aims to create a robust network that not only supports local startups but also facilitates their growth on a global scale.
The establishment of these innovation hubs represents a significant step in Azerbaijan’s efforts to modernize its economy and enhance its technological landscape. As the country moves forward, the focus on digital solutions and innovation is expected to play a crucial role in its economic development and societal progress.
