Azerbaijan Expands Innovation Hubs in Universities by Year-End
Azerbaijan is set to establish several new innovation centers within universities by the end of 2023, according to Farid Osmanov, Chairman of the Innovation and Digital Development Agency (IDDA). This announcement was made during the “Demo-Day” event for the “Green and Digital Silk Road” international acceleration program, part of the “Startup School 3” initiative organized by the Enterprise Azerbaijan portal.
Osmanov emphasized the IDDA’s commitment to promoting digitalization and innovation across the nation. He stated that the initiatives aim to enhance the well-being of civil society, improve business processes, and ensure that public services are accessible and efficient. He remarked, “With rapid technological development, the adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) solutions and digital tools is no longer a choice but a necessity.”
The innovation spaces are being created in universities located in Baku, Sumgayit, and other educational institutions throughout the country. These centers will serve as collaborative platforms for government agencies, academic institutions, startups, and businesses to work together effectively. Osmanov noted that additional innovation centers are planned for completion in other universities before the year’s end.
Goals and Collaboration for Future Development
The overarching goal of these initiatives is to cultivate a culture of innovation and support the development of an ecosystem conducive to technological advancement. Osmanov highlighted the importance of collaboration with universities, stating that joint projects and new initiatives are essential to strengthen innovative thinking within society. He aims to actively involve youth and startups to accelerate digital development in Azerbaijan.
The establishment of three venture funds in collaboration with the private sector has already facilitated support for over 30 startups. Osmanov remarked on the significance of building connections and ensuring access to both domestic and international markets to further bolster innovation.
With this strategic push, Azerbaijan seeks not only to enhance its educational framework but also to position itself as a regional leader in innovation and digital transformation. The establishment of innovation hubs is expected to play a crucial role in supporting the country’s ambitious goals for technological development and economic sustainability as it moves towards the end of 2023.
