US, Qatar, Egypt, and Turkey Call for Restraint in Gaza Truce
After a crucial meeting in Miami on December 20, 2023, the United States, along with Qatar, Egypt, and Turkey, urged all parties involved in the Gaza ceasefire to uphold their commitments and exercise restraint. The discussions aimed to stabilize the fragile truce that was established following more than two years of conflict between Israel and Hamas.
Key Developments from the Miami Talks
Top officials from the four nations convened with US special envoy Steve Witkoff to review the initial phase of the ceasefire, which took effect on October 10, 2023. “We reaffirm our full commitment to the entirety of the President’s 20-point peace plan and call on all parties to uphold their obligations, exercise restraint, and cooperate with monitoring arrangements,” Witkoff stated in a message posted on X.
Despite these diplomatic efforts, ongoing tensions threaten the ceasefire. Gaza’s civil defense agency reported that six individuals were killed on Friday due to Israeli shelling of a shelter, raising the total number of Palestinians killed by Israeli fire to approximately 400 since the truce began. In response, Israel has accused Hamas of violating the ceasefire, with military reports indicating that three Israeli soldiers have died in Gaza since the agreement was initiated.
Future Steps and Transitional Governance
The meeting underscored the need for a transitional administration in Gaza, which is expected to be established in the second phase of the ceasefire agreement. The four nations expressed their intention to continue consultations in the coming weeks to determine the next steps.
According to the ceasefire terms, Israel is set to withdraw from its positions in Gaza, while Hamas will be replaced by an interim governing authority. An international stabilization force is also expected to be deployed in the territory. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio indicated that Washington hopes other countries will contribute troops to this force, though he warned that the process risks collapse if Hamas is not disarmed.
The ongoing discussions highlight the complexity of achieving lasting peace in the region, as all parties navigate the delicate balance between security and humanitarian needs. As the situation unfolds, the international community remains watchful, emphasizing the importance of cooperation and dialogue to maintain stability.
