Kazakhstan Champions AI Collaboration with Japan at Central Asia Summit
Kazakhstan has officially backed the Tokyo Initiative, a program aimed at enhancing cooperation in artificial intelligence (AI) between Japan and the Central Asian countries. President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev expressed this support during the Central Asia+Japan Summit held in Astana on December 20, 2023. He underscored the strategic significance of digital transformation, highlighting Japan’s innovations as benchmarks for quality and technological sophistication.
President Tokayev outlined Kazakhstan’s ambitious plans to evolve into a digital state. This includes the establishment of the Alem International Artificial Intelligence Center and the launch of two supercomputers powered by American technology within the current year. He stated that the upcoming Digital Kazakhstan strategy will commence next year, focusing on the digitalization of crucial sectors such as industry, public services, and education. This initiative aims to create an environment conducive to the growth of AI and digital technologies.
Tokayev proposed that the new AI partnership platform from the Tokyo Initiative be hosted at Astana Hub, the largest IT startup technopark in Central Asia, as well as at the Alem International Center. These facilities are equipped with the necessary infrastructure and an international ecosystem to foster regional AI collaboration.
In a notable development earlier this year, Kazakhstan established its first research university dedicated to the field of artificial intelligence. This initiative was part of the Digital Bridge 2025 international forum in Astana, during which the Alem International AI Center was inaugurated.
Kazakhstan’s proactive approach in the realm of AI and digital transformation signals its commitment to becoming a key player in the technological landscape of Central Asia. By aligning itself with Japan’s expertise, Kazakhstan is positioning itself to leverage advanced technologies that can significantly enhance its economic and social frameworks. The collaboration under the Tokyo Initiative could pave the way for innovative solutions that benefit not only the participating countries but the broader region as well.
