Six Indonesian Men Arrested for Illegal Entry into Singapore
Six men from Indonesia, aged between 23 and 29, were apprehended early on December 21, 2023, for illegally entering Singapore. The Singapore Police Coast Guard (PCG) detected a wooden boat carrying the individuals at around 12:35 AM in the waters off Tanah Merah, which falls within Singapore’s territorial waters.
Upon interception, the PCG arrested the six men for unlawful entry. Preliminary investigations indicated that the group intended to enter Singapore using the boat to seek employment opportunities. They are scheduled to face charges in court on December 23, 2023.
Legal Consequences and Police Response
If convicted, each individual could face a prison sentence of up to six months along with a minimum of three strokes of the cane, as stipulated by Singaporean law for immigration offenses. The Commander of the Police Coast Guard, Senior Assistant Commissioner of Police Ang Eng Seng, praised his officers for their vigilance and effective teamwork during the operation.
Ang stated that the PCG remains committed to taking decisive action against immigration violations to ensure the security of Singapore’s coastal borders and territorial waters. This incident highlights ongoing efforts by law enforcement to prevent illegal entry and safeguard the nation’s security against potential threats.
The apprehension of these six individuals underscores the challenges faced by authorities in managing immigration and maintaining border security. The PCG continues to monitor the waters around Singapore closely to deter illegal activities and protect the integrity of its borders.
