Six Indonesian men were arrested early on December 21, 2023, for illegally entering Singapore, according to the Singapore Police. The arrests occurred at approximately 12:35 AM when the Police Coast Guard (PCG) detected a wooden craft carrying the men off the coast of Tanah Merah within Singapore’s territorial waters.
Upon interception, the men were taken into custody for unlawful entry. Preliminary investigations indicate that their intention was to enter Singapore illegally to seek employment. The six men, aged between 23 and 29, are scheduled to face charges in court on Monday. If convicted, they could each face a maximum jail term of up to six months, along with a minimum of three strokes of the cane.
Police Commend Vigilance and Teamwork
Senior Assistant Commissioner of Police Ang Eng Seng, who serves as the Commander of the Police Coast Guard, praised his officers for their vigilance and teamwork in executing the operation. He emphasized the importance of maintaining security and protecting Singapore’s territorial waters from immigration offenses and related crimes.
The PCG remains committed to taking firm action against individuals attempting to enter the country unlawfully, reinforcing the need for strict border control measures. This incident highlights ongoing challenges related to illegal immigration in the region and the proactive measures taken by authorities to address these issues.
